Program Overview

The Vocational Nursing Program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), also known as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in some states. This program provides comprehensive training in nursing theory, clinical skills, and professional ethics to equip students with the knowledge and competence required to deliver safe and effective patient care in healthcare settings.

Sunrise School of Nursing Vocational Nursing program has been approved by the Board of vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) and is a private institution, that is approved to operate by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), and that approval to operate means compliance with state standards as set forth in the CEC and 5, CCR. An institution may not imply that the Bureau, endorses programs, or the Bureau approval means the institution exceeds minimum state standards. The program consists of 1788 course hours: 618 theory hours and 1170 hours of skills lab and clinical practice.  

Key Program Components

  1. Foundations of Nursing Practice: Explore the foundational principles and concepts of nursing practice. Gain an understanding of the nursing process, ethical and legal considerations, scope of practice, and professional standards of care for vocational nurses.

  2. Anatomy and Physiology: Develop a solid understanding of human anatomy and physiology relevant to nursing practice. Learn about the structure and function of body systems, common health conditions, and the effects of illness and disease on physiological processes.

  3. Pharmacology and Medication Administration: Learn about pharmacology principles, drug classifications, and medication administration techniques. Gain proficiency in calculating dosages, administering medications via various routes, and monitoring patient responses to pharmacological interventions.

  4. Nursing Assessment and Health Promotion: Develop skills in conducting comprehensive nursing assessments and promoting patient health and wellness. Learn to assess vital signs, collect health history data, perform physical examinations, and identify risk factors for disease.

  5. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Explore medical-surgical nursing concepts and interventions for patients with acute and chronic health conditions. Learn to provide holistic care, manage symptoms, administer treatments, and promote recovery in medical-surgical settings.

  6. Maternal and Child Health Nursing: Gain knowledge and skills in maternal and child health nursing care. Learn about prenatal care, labor and delivery, postpartum care, newborn care, pediatric nursing interventions, growth and development milestones, and family-centered care.

  7. Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing: Understand mental health and psychiatric nursing concepts for patients with mental health disorders. Learn to assess mental status, provide therapeutic communication, implement interventions for psychiatric emergencies, and promote mental wellness.

  8. Gerontological Nursing: Learn about the unique needs of elderly patients in gerontological nursing care. Gain skills in assessing geriatric patients, managing age-related health conditions, promoting independence, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for older adults.

  9. Nursing Ethics and Professionalism: Explore ethical dilemmas and professional issues in nursing practice. Learn to uphold ethical standards, respect patient rights, maintain confidentiality, and collaborate effectively with interprofessional healthcare teams.

  10. Clinical Practicum Experience: Apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in supervised clinical practicum experiences. Gain hands-on experience providing direct patient care, performing nursing interventions, and applying nursing principles in real-world clinical settings under the guidance of experienced nursing instructors and preceptors.

Program Requirements:

Admission to this program available to any student who meets the eligibility requirements as approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians:  

  1. All applicants to the vocational program must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Complete the application of the admission to the program. Application fee of $100 (Non-refundable).
  3.  Photo Identification – Driver’s License, Identification Card, Alien ID Card, Passport, Social Security Card. Proof of 12th grade graduation or have a GED passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) are eligible for admission to the program. Official transcripts from other educational institutions.
  4.  Students must have completed a certified nursing assistant course and obtained a certificate prior to enrollment into the program. (Must be a CNA)
  5. Enrollment to a new class every 3 semesters and students must satisfy prerequisites requirements for   eligibility for enrollment in the new class. Students that meet the enrollment requirements are placed on a waiting list and enrolled to the program as space becomes available.
  6. Students enrolled in a clinical rotation class must show proof of drug testing and Covid testing. Must wear a mask as required by the facility.
  7. All students enrolled in all classes must have a live scan (background check) before clinical rotations commerce.
  8. Must Attend a Mandatory Orientation. 

Required proof of required vaccinations (or required titers) for the following:

  • Physical Examination (within 30 days prior to the 1st day of clinical)
  • Tuberculosis screen two step, or Chest X-Ray. Student with a history of positive PPD should provide current chest X-ray negative result and fill out a questionnaire annually.
  • Hepatitis B (three dose series)or a positive titer or waiver.
  • Varicella or a positive titer and MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) Vaccination or a positive titer.
  • T-dap within the last 10 years, also recommended polio vaccinations.
  • Influenza during the influenza season or must wear a mask during the clinical rotation
  • Covid-19 vaccine and/or Covid-19 weekly testing according to CDC, CDPH, federal and state recommendations.
  • Students who are pregnant or become pregnant during the program should be cleared by the physician and have no restrictions.
  • All health requirements must be met, if not student may not be enrolled or could be dropped from the program.
